Mississippi State football is going to see some significant overturn to its roster. Following a disappointing 2-10 season, there are going to be plenty of new faces on both sides of the ball. Though not every player transferring "from Mississippi State" was necessarily a contributor or even officially a part of the team for the 2024 season.
Running back Jeffery Pittman transferring from Mississippi State
Senior running back Jeffery Pittman has entered his name in the transfer portal. Pittman played one season with the Bulldogs in 2023. Ahead of the 2024 season, head coach Jeff Lebby announced that Pittman was no longer with the program. So while Pittman will officially enter the portal from Mississippi State, he technically was not a part of the roster.
The details of Pittman leaving the program are murky, as Jeff Lebby never elaborated as to why he was not with the team for the 2024 season and who made that decision. The expectation during the offseason was that Pittman would be a part of Mississippi State's regular running back rotation for the fall. But as the season approached, it became clear that the likes of Davon Booth, Keyvone Lee, and Johnnie Daniels were all ahead of Pittman in the rotation.
Jeffery Pittman saw a bigger role in the Bulldog offense in 2023. The JUCO-product backed-up Woody Marks and Seth Davis, rushing for 268 yards and one touchdown. Pittman's best performance came in a win over Southern Miss, in which he had 10 carries for 98 yards and a score. Pittman also caught two touchdowns, including a game-winner in overtime against Arizona.
Pittman is a tough runner that has some nice burst to him, but it's unlikely that he's a starting back at the power conference level. He could certainly be a nice player at a G5 program though.
