Jeff Lebby needed to find more speed on in his receiver room after their recent departures, and this guy provides that.

Mississippi State went into the offseason thinking the bulk of their work in the transfer portal would have to be on the defensive side of the ball. That's still mostly true, as State's first four official portal commitments have been on defense.

But with starting wide receivers Kevin Coleman and Mario Craver choosing to enter the portal, State has some big holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball. They took a step in replacing their production at WR on Friday...

Oklahoma wide receiver Brenen Thompson commits to Mississippi State Bulldogs out of transfer portal

If there's one attribute you want out of wide receivers in a Jeff Lebby offense, it's speed, and State just added a whole lot of speed to its receiving corps. Former Oklahoma WR Brenen Thompson committed to the Bulldogs out of the transfer portal on Friday, and running fast is what he does best.

Thompson was a deep threat for the Sooners. In two years at OU, he caught 26 passes for 471 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 18.1 yards per catch. He averaged 45 yards per reception on his touchdown catches. While not an every down player for OU, when he was brought in the game to run by the defense, he did just that.

Thompson was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2022. A track athlete, he posted a 10.38 100-meters dash and won a state title in the 200-meters. The Spearman, TX native signed with Texas out of high school and spent one year in Austin before going to rival Oklahoma. Now, he reunites with his old OC in Jeff Lebby.

Brenen Thompson will likely play the role Mario Craver held in the Bulldogs' offense

It's very clear why Mississippi State added Brenen Thompson. Jeff Lebby needs someone who can get behind the defense on the field. In an offense built around "scoring from far", Thompson does just that. Lebby personally had a humorous reaction on "X" to the speedster's commitment.

Thompson is likely coming in to fill the void left by Mario Craver, who served as State's primary deep threat in 2024. Whether or not Thompson can be an every down player like Craver was will be another discussion, but in terms of having someone to stretch the field and threaten the defense vertically, the Bulldogs have found that in Brenen Thompson.
