When Jeff Lebby, Mississippi State football’s newest head coach, met with media members, he made it clear he intends to call the plays as the head coach in Starkville.

Monday evening, the Mississippi State Bulldogs held a friendly press conference to introduce Jeff Lebby, the newest head coach of the Mississippi State football program, to media members who cover the Bulldogs. And then of course, the media members would then convey what they saw there to their respective audiences.

Given Lebby’s offensive coaching philosophies, the ponderings about who would run that side of the ball came up during the press conference.

With Lebby’s history running offenses and with how much he has been rooted on that side of the ball, it makes sense that he’d have an investment in what happens there. And he made it clear that he’s going to be the play caller for the Bulldogs once football season rolls around.

On the offensive side of things, it sounds like Lebby is interested in orchestrating what happens. The veer-and-shoot offense that he’s been a part of for over a decade will continue to run with his guidance and steering, it seems.

“I will continue to call it. I think that’s important for me as we get started in this in this thing, having one voice as we move forward,” Lebby said.

That said, there’s still an intention to put a staff together, and that includes an offensive coordinator.

“As we’re putting together the staff, [I] still have the ability to hire an offensive coordinator from a title standpoint to be able to take some of the day-to-day and be able to have a total control of the organizational things that go on,” Lebby explained.

The OC, who will apparently have total control outside of play calling, will be someone who is close to Lebby and helps run how everything goes.

“Whether that be practice or game planning, so that I do have the ability to be a head coach. So, he’ll have an incredible extension of me, one that I trust, one that understands the system and has lived in it for sure.”

It’ll be interesting to see who Lebby hires to fill that role with those responsibilities.
