Air Force at Boise State

Friday, 3:00 PM CT on FS1

Speaking of computer rankings determining a conference championship matchup, let’s turn our attention out west, shall we? The Mountain West chose to eliminate divisions this season. And as a result, there’s an absolute cluster at the top of the league.

UNLV leads the league at 6-1. Then there’s a three-way tie between Air Force, Boise State, and San Jose State at 5-2. And these four teams all play each other this weekend. Naturally by leading the league the Rebels will play for the championship with a win over SJSU. A UNLV win knocks the Spartans to three MWC losses, meaning the winner of Air Force-Boise would reach the title game.

But if UNLV loses, chaos ensues. In that scenario, UNLV, SJSU, and the winner of AFA-Boise would all be tied at 6-2 within the league. And in the case of a three-way tie featuring teams that did not all play each other, the Mountain West, like the American, turns to the computers to determine the title game matchup.

Apparently the Rebels are rated high enough in those computers currently that even with a loss, they’d almost certainly still reach the championship game. Still, who would get in between SJSU and the AFA-Boise winner would potentially comes down to who puts up the most impressive performance this weekend.

I’d include the UNLV-SJSU game within this as a game to watch, but it’s only available via streaming on Stadium TV. I have no idea if that’s subscription based or not. But hey if you’re really interested, I’m sure you can figure that part out. But Air Force-Boise will be available through traditional means, and that’s a great G5 matchup to tune-in to.
