Charles Huff of the Marshall Thundering Herd

Mississippi State football fans are pretty familiar with Charles Huff and the Marshall Thundering Herd head coach is certainly familiar with Starkville and the Southeastern Conference. While the Joe Moorhead era was plagued with underachieving, Huff was a really bright spot for the Bulldogs and was clearly a rising star at the time as an assistant on Moorhead’s coaching staff.

He hasn’t been at Marshall for very long and so far Huff has demonstrated the ability to help his team punch above its weight class and accomplish some pretty impressive things. When the Thundering Herd won nine games during his second season in 2022, Marshall snagged a win over Notre Dame in the process.

Huff likely won’t be many people’s first choice right now because he’s on a five-game losing streak, but he’s shown he can be a dynamic recruiter and worked well as part of Nick Saban’s staff during the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Despite the fact that this has been a painful losing streak for the Thundering Herd, Marshall has still had a few bright moments this season. Wins over East Carolina and Virginia Tech are worth noting here.

And all in all, Huff is 20-15 in less than three seasons after taking over a team that is working on transitioning to the Sun Belt and the chaos that conference can provide.

With his familiarity with Starkville and coaching in the SEC, Huff is someone worth watching as he continues to build his name and the Marshall Thundering Herd football team.
