1999 Peach Bowl: Miss. State Bulldogs meet the Clemson Tigers in Atlanta

Another Peach Bowl for Jackie Sherrill and another chance at getting a win over an ACC opponent in Atlanta. This time, thankfully, the Mississippi State Bulldogs finally found a way to get a win in the postseason.

As the Bulldogs met up with the Clemson Tigers on December 30, 1999 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, Sherrill led MSU to cap off the season on a high note in a defensive struggle.

Miss. State and Clemson managed to keep each other off the scoreboard with a scoreless first half tie, but MSU’s offense found some life in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs broke the tie with a 39-yard field goal from Scott Westerfield.

State then followed that up with a two-yard touchdown run from Wayne Madkin to take a 10-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. Clemson cut into that lead with a touchdown run of the Tigers’ own, but Mississippi State put things out of reach as Madkin tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass.

And that’s how Mississippi State beat Clemson 17-7 and that’s how Jackie Sherrill finally broke through and got a bowl win with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. After several disappointing attempts at getting a bowl win, the Bulldogs finally did it in the Peach Bowl over a respected program like the Clemson Tigers.
