College football schedule, week 6: No. 24 Fresno State at Wyoming

7 p.m. CT on FOX

Normally you wouldn’t include a game featuring a ranked team in a piece about under the radar matchups, but how many of you reading this actually realized Fresno State was currently ranked and sitting at 5-0 on the year?

It’s ok if you didn’t. That’s exactly why I do this piece every week – to introduce fans to more of the fun teams college football has to offer. And Fresno definitely qualifies. The Bulldogs are lighting it up on offense. QB Mikey Keene is having a remarkable season, averaging 295 yards per game with 14 TDs on the year. And after the first couple of weeks, Fresno has turned it around on defense, allowing 19 total points over the last three games.

I’ve spread the good word about my beloved Wyoming Cowboys before, and I will continue to. They’re just a tough, hard-nosed, old-school football team. There’s a descriptor that fits with those that I’m specifically not using because of an inside joke (IYKYK). But they force their opponents to play their style and grind them down, and Laramie is a very tough place to play. Also, their offense may be figuring some things out with RB Harrison Waylee now healthy (averaging 152 yards the last three games).

These are two of the best teams in the Mountain West, and this could easily be a preview of the eventual Mountain West championship game. We get this game on national TV, and the night slate beyond this one isn’t all that special. Tune in for this.
