As the 2023 Mississippi State football season keeps getting closer, Will Rogers keeps getting more and more recognition, including from the Davey O’Brien Award.

Mississippi State football’s star quarterback Will Rogers has received even more recognition. Go ahead and add the 2023 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Preseason Watch List to that long list of awards keeping their eye on Rogers and what he is able to accomplish in Starkville this season.

Going into the 2023 Mississippi State football season, it’s clear that the Davey O’Brien Foundation will be paying attention to the Bulldogs this season.

The Davey O’Brien Award is among the most prestigious awards in pretty much all of college football. Rogers was a semifinalist for the award a season ago and even though he’s playing in a different offense this season, it’s clear that folks believe he can still accomplish quite a bit this year.

As Rogers rolls into this season, he’s pretty close to earning himself the title of the all-time leading passer (in terms of career passing yards) in the history of the Southeastern Conference. Given the offenses and the quarterbacks that have played in the SEC (especially over the past decade), that’s an impressive feat.

Rogers currently has 10,689 career passing yards. To get that top spot in SEC history, he just needs to throw for 2,478 yards.

That’s certainly attainable, even if Mississippi State were to operate a run-heavy offense.

But throwing for 2,500 yards in a season won’t be enough to win the Davey O’Brien Award in 2023. Rogers will likely need to accomplish quite a bit more. And theoretically, he is capable of that.

Mississippi State will need to win at a high level for Rogers to really receive enough attention to have a chance at winning the award. And, funny enough, Rogers has to play at a pretty high level for Mississippi State to have a chance at winning at a high level.

We’ll see what the offense looks like and if that happens.

The 2023 Mississippi State football season gets started on September 2 at home as the MSU Bulldogs welcome the Southeastern Louisiana Lions to Starkville.
