The Purdue Boilermakers are a Big 10 underdog. Mississippi State football can relate.

Oh hey look another underdog!

While the programs aren’t the exact same by any stretch of the imagination, Mississippi State football can relate to some of the struggles that the Purdue Boilermakers experience.

And yet, these two teams have never played each other.

The Boilermakers have produced stars like Drew Brees and Rondale Moore, but Purdue is still seeking greater success as they try to navigate the Big Ten conference. Purdue’s last Big Ten title came over 20 years ago and they’re looking to find a way to elevate themselves as a program.

With Ryan Walters stepping in to take over as the head coach after the departure of Jeff Brohm, Purdue is aiming for a resurgence. And this program is clearly not a powerhouse, but the Boilermakers have shown potential to be dangerous (see that dominant win Purdue had over Ohio State back in 2018).

Matching up with Purdue would be interesting for the Bulldogs. In theory, State has more talent on its roster (generally speaking) and the Bulldogs play in the SEC, so they’re pretty used to tough tests.

But that’s never a given and Purdue has proven to be pesky.

Pitting these two teams against each other would be fascinating and would provide college football fans with a great matchup between two hungry programs that are both eager to show how far they’ve come from being college football laughing stocks.
