Mississippi State softball: Bulldogs land Louisiana Tech transfer
By Ethan Lee
Samantha Ricketts and her Mississippi State softball program have brought in a talented transfer from Louisiana Tech as part of the 2023 signing class.
The Mississippi State softball team just added some more talent to an already solid 2023 recruiting class. Samantha Ricketts and her coaching staff were able to convince Sierra Sacco to come to Starkville and play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
This isn’t the first time Sacco has played for a team of Bulldogs as she started her career at Louisiana Tech. During her time in Ruston, Sacco had a solid career (she was previously named National Freshman Of The Year Finalist back in 2022).
As Brian Ogden notes in the official Mississippi State softball news release, Sacco started every game during the first two seasons of her career.
That’s a lot of experience to already have as Sacco enters her junior season. And that’s experience the Bulldogs could certainly use going into the 2024 college softball season.
Mississippi State softball lands talented Louisiana Tech transfer
While Sacco hasn’t really been much of a power hitting threat, she is consistent. She hasn’t hit a home run in her career up to this point, but she boasts an impressive .398 batting average and has 125 hits to her name so far.
That’s not bad for just two seasons.
She spent much of her time at Louisiana Tech playing in the outfield, and it doesn’t seem like the MSU coaching staff would really move her around the field all that much in Starkville.
Sacco is joining a highly touted class of young players who could definitely provide a spark of life for Ricketts and her Mississippi State Bulldogs. Along with Sacco, the Bulldogs are adding five other players in this year’s signing class.
Ricketts is looking to continue building the MSU softball program and being able to add talented, and experienced, contributors could go a long way to improving things sooner rather than later. Sacco won’t solve all the problems the MSU softball team had last season, but it never hurts to add talented outfielders. Generally speaking, it helps a lot.
