The Mississippi State baseball team took the midweek win from the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. After being down 8-6, the Diamond Dawgs came back and defeated the Southern Miss baseball team by a score of 10-9. Mississippi State needed to continue the momentum of wins after winning the weekend series before, but this week’s competition was much tougher than the weekend before.

Here are my early post-game thoughts:

The bats will always keep Mississippi State baseball in tough games.

The Southern Miss baseball program is a good one, and Tuesday night proved that Mississippi State can hang with or defeat any team because of how good their bats are. The Diamond Dawgs have some guys who can hit the ball in the hole or hit it out of the park. Obviously, fielding is the number one issue right now, but typically, that stuff gets fixed by the latter half of March.

It is always nice to beat one of your in-state rivals.

Southern Miss baseball has sort of owned Mississippi State baseball in this midweek games, but last night the Diamond Dawgs turned things around and got the win. It is always a bit sweeter whenever it is one of the other in-state schools that you defeat in front of a Mississippi-only crowd.

Nate Dohm came into the game and had a great night at the mound.

Mississippi State baseball’s batts were on fire Tuesday night, but whenever Nate Dohm came into the game, I started to focus on Mississippi State baseball’s pitching. Dohm was throwing in the upper 90s for most of the game, and he was placing the ball well. Dohm looks like he could be a dangerous closer as the Diamond Dawgs continue to get better and better in the field and at pitching. Look out for Nate Dohm in March and April.
