The Mississippi State baseball team is back to start its 2023 college baseball season this Friday night, February 17th at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville, Mississippi. The Diamond Dawgs will face off against the Virginia Military Institute Keydets for a three-game home series to start the season.

Here are some things to note before this year’s baseball season begins:

Last year may have been a bit disappointing for Mississippi State baseball, but do not have those same expectations.

Last year, the Mississippi State baseball team had one of the worst seasons in recent history. What made it even worse was the Diamond Dawgs were coming off winning a national championship the year before.

The good thing is it would be hard for the Diamond Dawgs to have a worse year than they did last year. The Mississippi State baseball looks to turn things around from last year, and once again, make it back to Omaha.

Who are some of the returning starters from last year’s roster?

Two of the rotation starters for this weekend were on last year’s roster, Cade Smith and KC Hunt. Both Smith and Hunt, saw the mound multiple times last year.

Kellum Clark is another huge returning starter for the Mississippi State baseball team. Clark is arguably Mississippi State’s best slugger on this year’s roster.

Logan Forsythe, Stone Simmons, and Luke Hancock are a few other names that Mississippi State baseball fans will recognize as the 2023 college baseball season begins.

Looking at what the recruiting class brought into this year’s roster.

Mississippi State has had top 10 recruiting classes in baseball the last two years, and I believe this year will be where fans really start to see the results of that. Here are a couple of names to be on the lookout for, even today: Will Gibbs, Dakota Jordan, and Brock Topper.
