It’s finally set! The playoff committee has decided to expand to 12 teams in the year, 2026 (at the latest). The College Football Playoff Committee made the decision to expand on the afternoon of Friday, September 2, 2022. This could not have happened without the help of the president of MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY and the chairman of the CFP Board of Managers, Mark Keenum. We salute you.

Personally, I think this is great news for college football fans. College football is a changing game, and you might like some of the changes, and you might not. Today, I believe we received news of one of the good changes that are happening within the sport.

 What does this mean?

This means that there will be six conference champions that automatically receive bids to compete in the College Football Playoff. After those six are in, there will be six more teams added to the playoff to compete for a national championship.

What does this mean for the SEC?

Will there be many changes? Probably not. The Alabamas and Georgias will once again make it to the national championship game, but the road might be a bit more difficult. The goal might change for the SEC. Put THREE SEC teams in the College Football Playoff.

Does this change anything for the Mississippi State Bulldogs?

Yes, of course, it does. The goal of winning the SEC West and ultimately the SEC Championship does not change, but there is a smaller goal in reach. Mississippi State needs to be one of the best twelve teams in the country. That is a goal that seems attainable for our university. The consideration of who makes it into the playoff will get more and more serious, but Mississippi State could be a top-12 team and finish 2nd in the SEC West. It’s certainly possible.
