Recruiting hasn’t been all that spectacular.

The Mississippi State football team currently has the 23rd ranked recruiting class for 2019. There are some key players in this list of commitments that will be crucial down the line for the Bulldogs, but that’s not a group that will make MSU a title contender over night.

In all actuality, it’s a group that is currently right on par with what Dan Mullen did in Starkville. And his reputation as a recruiter regularly infuriated many Mississippi State football fans each and every year he was at MSU.

The last class that Mullen really brought to MSU was the 2017 one. That group ranked 24th in the nation, according to 247Sports. The 2016 class? That one finished at 28th. The 2015 class ended up at 18th.

Joe Moorhead’s 2018 class was the No. 27 class nationwide, but many fans excused that because he didn’t have a full recruiting cycle in Starkville. So far, after a full recruiting cycle in Starkville, very little has changed.

This isn’t a concern if one is content with maintaining the level of success that Dan Mullen established before he left. But given the fact that Joe Moorhead has talked about championships, he’ll need to start recruiting better to match those raised expectations.
