Joe Moorhead wants to implement his offense on the Mississippi State football team as quickly as possible, and it might lead to more transfers.

Mississippi State football player Keith Mixon’s name has been entered into the NCAA Transfer portal, and he will transfer away from the program according to Matt Zenitz of al.com. While there is nothing to suggest other players might transfer, it wouldn’t be shocking if this were the first to come, especially  on the offensive side of the football for the Bulldogs.

This isn’t necessarily a good thing or a bad thing for the Mississippi State football team. It is simply a logical next step for a roster built to run an offense no longer being implemented.

When Dan Mullen was the head coach of the Mississippi State football team, he built an offense built around a power running game and zone reads. His quarterbacks were always dual threat players who were just as productive with their legs as they are with their arms.

Now that Joe Moorhead is the coach of the Mississippi State football team, he has made the transition from the zone read to a run pass option offense. We saw on multiple occasions this past season the roster Dan Mullen built was not suited to run the offense Joe Moorhead wants to run.

Now, we can have a discussion about whether or not Moorhead wasted this Mississippi State football season by implementing his offense with a roster not capable of executing it, but that is for another time. This is simply stating that it shouldn’t surprise fans if Mixon’s decision to transfer isn’t the only we see this offseason.

The Bulldogs learned the hard way in 2018 that trying to run an offense without the proper personnel can be painfully difficult. If players on the current roster aren’t going to be utilized properly, then it’s in their best interest and the team’s best interest for them to look for a better opportunity elsewhere.
