Mississippi State football finishes 2018 season at No. 25 in Coaches Poll
By Ethan Lee
The Mississippi State football team ended the 2018 season in disappointing fashion. The Bulldogs, however, also ended the year ranked in the Amway Coaches Poll. Given how the season wrapped up, that’s pretty generous.
After the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Mississippi State football team in the Outback Bowl, the outlook and perception of the 2018 Mississippi State football season changed drastically. The Bulldogs had plenty of momentum heading into bowl season and looked to finish the year on a high note after improving down the stretch of the season.
That Outback Bowl loss made everything seem a bit more sour than it should be. The Bulldogs looked complete helpless at times against Iowa and the Hawkeyes took advantage of Mississippi State’s defense better than most other teams had.
That’s frustrating and infuriating. But, well, the Mississippi State football team still ended the year ranked. Not in the AP poll though. The Bulldogs finished the season unraknked over there. But, the Amway Coaches Poll was a bit more generous to MSU.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the season at No. 25, one spot ahead of Iowa, who finished the season receiving votes.
Here’s how the final version of the 2018 Amway Coaches Poll looks:
- Clemson
- Alabama
- Ohio State
- Oklahoma
- Notre Dame
- Florida
- LSU
- Georgia
- Texas
- Washington State
- Kentucky
- Central Florida
- Washington
- Michigan
- Syracuse
- Texas A&M
- Penn State
- Fresno State
- Northwestern
- Army
- Utah State
- West Virginia
- Cincinnati
- Boise State
- Mississippi State
The fact that Mississippi State ended up ranked while Iowa didn’t is absolutely hilarious. The Bulldogs lost in a game full of mistakes while the Hawkeyes are unranked after taking Mississippi State down.
MSU probably shouldn’t be ranked here in the top 25 given who they are ranked over.
The Bulldogs also should have had a better year given the amount of talent and experience returning from a season ago. But, well, that didn’t happen. Mississippi State had a disappointing and underwhelming 2018. Here’s to hoping that 2019 is better.
