Marcus Murphy, a talented freshman from the Mississippi State football team, recently lost his mother and needs assistance for those who can donate.

EDITORIAL UPDATE 2:42 p.m.: Despite what we were initially informed with, Mississippi State’s compliance office has indicated that they have not approved of this GoFundMe and that any donations to this GoFundMe on the part of boosters may impact Marcus Murphy’s eligibility. This post was briefly removed and we are reaching out to the compliance office to find out what is going on.

EDITORIAL UPDATE 2:52 p.m.: We have removed the link to the GoFundMe as we await a response from MSU’s compliance office to ensure that Murphy’s eligibility remains intact. We will restore the link if we are able to after we hear from the compliance office.

EDITORIAL UPDATE 3:17 p.m.: West Point Athletics maintains that the GoFundMe is within rules. We are still waiting for a response from Mississippi State’s compliance office.

Marcus Murphy just finished up his freshman season for the Mississippi State football team. Murphy should be looking this time in his life as the beginning of his adult life which will be full of optimism.

Unfortunately this is not the case. Marcus Murphy recently lost his mother and needs the support of the Mississippi State football fans and community. A GoFundMe has been established fans can donate to, and the Mississippi State Compliance department has given the approval for it to be donated to without hurting Murphy’s eligibility.

The fact that the Mississippi State Compliance Department has signed off on this GoFundMe for one of the Mississippi State football players is an important detail. There has been other athletes who have had their eligibility threatened due to GoFundMe campaigns if they ever received the funds from those campaigns.

With the approval of the Mississippi State Compliance Department, Marcus Murphy and his family can receive any money donated to the GoFundMe campaign without fear of losing his NCAA eligibility.

It would have been a shame for him to lose his mother and then get blindsided with the loss of eligibility due to some technicality or rule that no one was aware of

Here is more information from the GoFundMe page.

"Our goal is to raise $25,000 to support Marcus and  Zarcayla  through this terrible tragedy . We are now looking to family, friends, and our community to support their family through this time. Please donate whatever you can. Every dollar counts and if you prefer, donate anonymously! Please don’t forget to share this on all of your social media pages. Thank you for your support and please keep this family in your prayers!!!"

Obviously, if you are able to support this Mississippi State football player financially, the family would appreciate every dollar they can get. If you can simply support by sharing, that would be fantastic as well.
