Mississippi State basketball: No. 8 Bulldogs pulverize Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns
By Ethan Lee
The No. 8 Mississippi State basketball team had no issue obliterating the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. MSU came away with a 68 point victory this afternoon to wrap up 2018. The Bulldogs will return to action in the new year.
Vic Schaefer has to be proud of how his 8th ranked Mississippi State basketball team played today.
The Bulldogs (12-1 overall) came out and finished 2018 with a tremendous and impressive victory over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (2-9 overall). MSU crushed their competition today with a smothering defense and an offense that simply couldn’t be stopped.
MSU’s starters were able to get plenty of rest in the process has well. 13 different players were able to get out on the floor today to some degree and no starter played more than Teaira McCowan’s 21 minutes.
Of MSU’s starters, Anriel Howard led the way for MSU scoring with 16 points. McCowan came in and played well alongside Howard with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Jordan Danberry had 12 points and 4 assists as well.
But neither Howard or McCowan led the Bulldogs in scoring this afternoon.
That was true sophomore guard Bre’Amber Scott.
Scott, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas and a former three-star recruit thrived today from the bench. She made just 7 of her 9 shots and hit both of her free throw attempts, but still scored an impressive 21 points.
It’s hard to accurately describe just how magnificently efficient Scott was today, but it is easy to say that Scott has a bright future with the Bulldogs if she can continue to develop and play at that level.
The Mississippi State basketball team is going to need someone who can reliably hit shots from behind the three point line, especially if this team is going to continue to make runs into the NCAA Tournament. Scott went 5-6 from behind the arc today. That skillset will be valuable to have when March rolls around.
It’ll also be great to have in future seasons.
As a whole, Mississippi State unsurprisingly played much better basketball today.
The Bulldogs made 50.7 percent of their shots and kept the Ragin’ Cajuns from making more than 22.6 percent of their field goal attempts. From behind the three point line, Mississippi State made exactly 40 percent of its attempts. Louisiana hit just 14.3 percent.
The Mississippi State basketball team also owned the boards in this game, pulling down a total of 58 rebounds while Louisiana got just 32 rebounds. MSU actually had more defensive rebounds than Louisiana had total rebounds as State scraped together 35.
The Bulldogs will return to action for the first time in 2019 on January 3rd. Mississippi State will face Arkansas on the road. MSU’s next home game will be on January 6th.
