The 2018 Mississippi State football team had arguably the best defense in the country, and three of those players were named to the AP All-American team.

The Mississippi State football team had its ups and downs in 2018, but the one constant throughout the year was a dominant defense. The defensive unit was one of the best, if not the best, in the country.

On Monday, thee players from the Mississippi State football team were named to the AP All-American Team, and all three came from the defensive side of the football. That comes as no surprise to anyone who followed the Bulldogs in 2018.

The Mississippi State football team placed one member of their defensive unit on the first second team of the AP All-Americanteam. Defensive End Montez Sweat was the lone representative to be placed on the second team

There were two players to represent the Mississippi State football team on the AP All-American Third Team. Defensive Tackle Jeffery Simmons and Safety Johnathan Abram represented the Bulldogs on the third team.

These honors are much deserved for these Mississippi State football players. The Bulldog defense finished the season number one in the country in scoring defense, giving up just 12 points per game. The Bulldogs were also third in the country in total defense giving up a little over 268 yards per game.

There will be many who think at least Sweat and Simmons could have been on the first team of the AP All-American teams. Most years, both of those players probably would have. But 2018 is one of the deepest years in recent memory when it comes to defensive linemen, and cracking the first team was as hard as ever. Had the Mississippi State football team had a better record, then all of the members of the defense might have been given more postseason recognition.

The Mississippi State football team and their stellar defensive unit will take the field one more time for the 2018 season. The team will travel to the Outback Bowl and take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. It will be the final hurrah for not just one of the best defensive teams in the country, but arguably the best defensive team to ever take the field for the Mississippi State football team.
