Lamar Peters of the Mississippi State basketball team had possibly the best two game stretch of his career and was named the SEC Player of the Week.

As Lamar Peters goes, so goes the Mississippi State basketball team. That has often been the case the past two seasons ever since the talented combo guard has shown up on the campus of Mississippi State.

So it comes with no surprise the Mississippi State basketball team won their two games last week in convincing fashion after Lamar Peters put on a show in both games. Peters is sharing the honor with Tennessee guard Admiral Schofield. Peters averaged 27.5 points per game in the wins over McNeese State at home and against Clemson in a neutral site victory in New Jersey on Saturday.

But just the points Lamar Peter put up for the Mississippi State basketball team only tells a small part of the story. Here is the press release from the SEC office.

"Mississippi State guard Lamar Peters, a 6-foot, 185-pound junior from New Orleans, La., and Tennessee guard Admiral Schofield, a 6-foot-6, 241-pound senior from Zion, Ill., were named SEC Co-Players of the Week. Peters racked up 27.5 points and 5.0 assists per game as Mississippi State stretched its winning streak to five consecutive games with wins over Clemson and McNeese State. Peters canned 62.1 percent of his shots fueled by 16 three-pointers. He set a program single-game record with eight treys against McNeese State only to equal it four days later versus Clemson. Schofield posted the best game of his career as he rallied the seventh-ranked Vols to a 76-73 win over No. 1 Gonzaga in Phoenix, finishing with a career-high 30 points to go along with six rebounds. Ending the game on an 11-5 run, the senior guard was responsible for Tennessee’s final 11 points during the final 3:17 of play while knocking down three of his career-high six treys. After scoring just five points in the first half, Schofield erupted after halftime to drop 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting with five threes."

To say the least, it was a great week for the Mississippi State basketball star. Asking him to shoot over 60% from three point range is asking way too much for the rest of the season, but if he can be the consistent spark plug he was this past week for the Bulldogs, the team will be tough to beat.

Lamar Peters and the Mississippi State basketball team will have another opportunity to improve their NCAA Tournament resume this weekend. The Bulldogs will host the 9-1 Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday at the Humphrey Coliseum.
