Ex-Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant to reportedly visit Mississippi State football
By Ethan Lee
There’s questions about the future of the quarterback position for the Mississippi State football team and former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant is reportedly visiting Starkville soon.
Nick Fitzgerald will be gone next season. Joe Moorhead will then be tasked with finding a new starting quarterback for the Mississippi State football team.
He’s got a couple of possible options on the roster right now with Keytaon Thompson and Jalen Mayden, but it looks like Moorhead might be considering other options that are not currently in Starkville as well. Reportedly, Kelly Bryant will be visiting the Mississippi State football program soon.
According to Rivals’ Woody Wommack, the former Clemson quarterback is starting to wrap up all of his visits over the next couple of weeks. One stop along his tour will be in Starkville this weekend for the Bulldogs’ game against Arkansas.
From Wommack’s report:
"The visit to Coral Gables will be one of three visits remaining on the schedule for Bryant, who will be at Mississippi State this weekend for an official visit and take a mid-week unofficial visit to Auburn the week of Nov. 19."
The news is pretty big due to a couple of reasons.
First, consider how good Kelly Bryant was for Clemson. The dual threat quarterback performed well for the Tigers on their way to the College Football Playoffs, completing 262 of his 398 pass attempts (65.8 percent) for 2802 yards, but only 13 touchdowns. However, Bryant also added 11 touchdowns on the ground and had 665 rushing yards last season.
Kelly Bryant was efficient and ran Clemson’s offense while being relatively error free as he only threw 8 interceptions last season.
The other reason this is fairly notable is that many have assumed that Keytaon Thompson would be the Bulldogs’ starter in 2019. Mississippi State’s young quarterback has made some big plays during his time in Starkville, but he hasn’t been all that efficient and Moorhead has seemingly expressed some concerns about Thompson’s performance in practice.
If Moorhead were to somehow get Kelly Bryant to join the Mississippi State football team, it would certainly shake up a lot of things about the future of the program. There’s a great chance that incoming freshman Garrett Shrader would redshirt next season. Then there’s the fates of Jalen Mayden and Keytaon Thompson to ponder.
Nothing is guaranteed here and Bryant is just visiting MSU as part of a somewhat long list of teams. But this is certainly something to keep an eye over the next couple of weeks.
