There were few players in the SEC facing as much scrutiny as the quarterback of the Mississippi State football team, but he responded in a big way.

There were many questions surrounding Mississippi State football quarterback Nick Fitzgerald when he took the field this past Saturday to take on the Texas A&M Aggies. It looked like the senior signal caller of the Bulldogs might be in danger of losing his starting job.

Some people crumble in the face of intense pressure. For the quarterback of the Mississippi State football team, Fitzgerald saw it as an opportunity to rise to the occasion.

Against the Aggies, Nick Fitzgerald put up incredible numbers this past Saturday. Fitzgerald accounted for 329 yards of total offense, threw two passing touchdowns, and he accounted for two more with his legs.

Because he had such a standout performance, the SEC named Fitzgerald and Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm the Co-offensive Players of the Week. Here is the official announcement from the SEC Twitter account.

This is an important honor for Mississippi State football quarterback Nick Fitzgerald. In the previous week against LSU, Fitzgerald threw for well under 100 yards and was intercepted by the LSU Tigers on four different occasions.

The poor play of the previous week combined with some less than stellar performance in recent weeks began to lead fans and media members to call for backup quarterback Keytaon Thompson to at least get some playing time, if not become the outright starter.

Thompson did play one very unproductive series against the Texas A&M Aggies. But it Was Nick Fitzgerald reestablishing himself as the leader of the Mississippi State football program was all said and done.

The Mississippi State football team will look to continue the offensive breakthrough this Saturday. They will take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at 6:30 at Davis Wade Stadium.
