Mississippi State football Keytaon Thompson should lead Bulldogs vs Texas A&M
By Ethan Lee
The Mississippi State football team needs a spark on offense. Will Joe Moorhead make a switch at quarterback in search of that spark?
It’s fair to say that Nick Fitzgerald has struggled this season, right? It’s not exactly the most pleasant thing in the world to consider going away from the guy that carried the Mississippi State football team to so many wins in the past, but it seems like that’s the choice that Joe Moorhead must consider making.
The Bulldogs are in need of answers on the offensive side of things. MSU hasn’t been able to generate more than three total touchdowns in four SEC games. That’s horrific for a team that had been able to boast something of a potent offense in recent years. It’s even worse considering that Joe Moorhead was hired to take the offense to the next level.
The bulk of the problems seem to stem from the quarterback position. Nick Fitzgerald has been great on the ground, running for a team leading 644 yards and 7 touchdowns this season. When it comes to passing, the Bulldogs can’t get anything going. Fitz has thrown for 768 yards and 4 touchdowns against 7 interceptions. He’s only completing 46.9 percent of his passes.
He’s not good this year.
In SEC play, he’s particularly awful. Fitzgerald has completed 44 of 99 attempts against SEC teams. He’s thrown for 371 yards in four SEC games and has 6 interceptions. Nick Fitzgerald hasn’t thrown a touchdown against a team from the SEC this year.
The Bulldogs need to do something. It’s time for a change at quarterback.
Now, there’s no guarantee that Keytaon Thompson will magically make everything better for the Mississippi State football team. Thompson, in his start against Stephen F. Austin, only completed 13 of his 31 passing attempts. Granted, Thompson also threw for 364 yards and five touchdowns in what is arguably the best passing performance that MSU has seen this season.
Ultimately, Keytaon Thompson can’t do any worse than Nick Fitzgerald when it comes to throwing the ball. It’s a change that the Bulldogs must consider, not only for the sake of the rest of this season, but also for the sake of the future of this program.
Whether or not Joe Moorhead will make a change remains to be seen. Unfortunately, it seems like Moorhead will continue to go with Fitzgerald despite the horrific level of production that he’s putting out on the field. It can’t hurt to make a change. The offense honestly can’t get much worse.
