The Mississippi State football team was ecstatic after taking down a top ten ranked team in the Auburn Tigers last Saturday.
“I am so proud of this football team right now, I can’t even describe it in words,” Joe Moorhead told his team, moments after the Bulldogs came off the field victorious. Moorhead and his Mississippi State football team had every right to be proud of the results against the then No. 8 Auburn Tigers.
The Tigers came in to the game with a dominant run defense and the Bulldogs pushed right through them. Before Saturday, Auburn was holding teams to 92.8 rushing yards per game. Now, that number has jumped up to 135.5 rushing yards per game.
That’s because Nick Fitzgerald, Kylin Hill, and Aeris Williams combined to run for 349 yards and two touchdowns on Auburn’s stout defense. The Bulldogs’ offensive line bulldozed right over Auburn’s defensive front, providing lanes for Fitzgerald, Hill, and Williams to gash right through.
And then the Mississippi State football team also held the Auburn Tigers to a season low 9 points on Saturday. Yes, the Tigers have been struggling on offense all year. However, they struggled at a new level against the Bulldogs.
That led to this celebration from Moorhead and his team:
Moorhead has to feel relieved after his team thoroughly beat a top ten ranked opponent. Pressure from fans had been mounting up after two horrible losses to the Kentucky Wildcats and the Florida Gators.
But before the Bulldogs’ season could spiral out of control, State came out and beat Auburn in dominant fashion. That win set the Bulldogs up for a bit of breathing room heading into the bye week at the halfway mark of the season.
Through the first six weeks of the season, the Bulldogs went 4-2. It’s not exactly the mark that the Mississippi State football team wanted to meet, but it’s a better result than what looked possible coming into the game against Auburn. Now, MSU has a week to rest up and get healthy. From there, the Bulldogs have six more games to prove themselves.
