The Mississippi State soccer team claimed a huge comeback win over the 13th ranked team in the country last night

On Thursday night, for the first time since 2015, the Mississippi State soccer team defeated a ranked opponent thanks to a great comeback effort and great play in overtime. The Mississippi State Bulldogs (8-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 SEC) defeated the No. 13 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks (7-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 SEC).

The Mississippi State soccer team fell behind the Gamecocks early on as South Carolina took an early 1-0 advantage over MSU just over 11 minutes into the game. South Carolina’s Lauren Chang scored the goal on a penalty kick to put the Gamecocks ahead. The goal was Chang’s fifth for the season.

But, from there, the Bulldogs played great defense and kept South Carolina from adding another goal throughout the remainder of the game. MSU’s persistence on offense eventually paid off as well.

In the second period, Mississippi State freshman Niah Johnson scored on a penalty kick of her own, tying things up at 1-1. The shot gave Johnson her third goal of the 2018 college soccer season. The Bulldogs and Gamecocks couldn’t score anymore in regulation, which sent the game into overtime.
