In Keytaon Thompson’s second start for the Mississippi State football team, he looked as if he could truly become the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs

The Mississippi State football team had a pretty solid offensive showing on Saturday. If there hadn’t been relevant breaking news that caught everyone’s attention, a casual observer may not have known that the Mississippi State Bulldogs didn’t actually have their starting quarterback. The offense seemed to work as it should. There was little reason to question as to whether or not MSU had its starting quarterback in the game.

But that news did exist. Nick Fitzgerald was unfortunately suspended. The Bulldogs had to play without him to start the Joe Moorhead era.

Now, thankfully, he’s back. Still, while Fitz was sitting the first game, Keytaon Thompson was performing incredibly well and, in the process, scorched the entirety of Stephen F. Austin’s defense. Part of that has to do with the quality of opponent and how the Lumberjacks aren’t exactly all that robust on defense.

But Keytaon Thompson should still be credited for everything that he did on Saturday.

This wasn’t Thompson’s first start for the Bulldogs and it’s arguably not his most impressive. Granted, there’s only two starts to Thompson’s catalog, but dueling against a Heisman trophy winner in a bowl game is a more exciting game to talk about and enjoy.

This game, however, showed that Thompson’s first start wasn’t necessarily a fluke and pretty much confirms that he is going to be the future of the Mississippi State Bulldogs’ on offense. Unless something unpredictable or unforeseeable happens between now and then, that is.

Last year, against the Louisville Cardinals and without a head coach to guide him, Keytaon Thompson threw for 127 yards and ran for another 147 yards and 3 touchdowns. That’s a total of 274 yards and 3 touchdowns.

To start the 2018 season, Thompson threw for 364 yards and 5 touchdowns while also running for 109 yards and a couple of touchdowns. In total against Stephen F. Austin, that’s 473 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Next. Mississippi State's passing attack is a bit different and a bit better. dark

The Mississippi State football team could have a pretty impressive star develop in Keytaon Thompson. He’s not there just yet, but he certainly appears ready to start for the Bulldogs. MSU is in a great position with having Nick Fitzgerald as the full time starter and Thompson just behind him in case something happens. The Bulldogs are set at quarterback for quite some time.
