ESPN rates three Mississippi State football players amongst the best in the nation
The Mississippi State football program is getting some decent respect going into the upcoming 2018 season. Earlier today, ESPN rated the 50 best college football players going into the 2018 college football season.
As MSU’s official football twitter account has noted, three different Mississippi State Bulldogs earned their way onto the list this year.
Montez Sweat entered the list at the 45th spot going into this season. Sweat is known as a dynamic pass rusher and is great at causing mayhem in opposing backfields. Alongside Jeffery Simmons and Gerri Green, Sweat was able to lead the Bulldogs in sacks and tackles for loss last season. He’s poised to succeed again in 2018 as little changes around him on the defensive line.
Speaking of defensive linemen, MSU has another one on ESPN’s list of the 50 best college football players in 2018. Jeffery Simmons himself comes in at 29th on the list. Simmons is excellent at breaking through the line and continuously finding ways to make plays. His size and speed will cause problems as he lines up on the defensive front this year.
Mississippi State’s highest rated player on the list is Nick Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald finds himself on the list as the 16th best player in all of college football. His dynamic running ability is what will intrigue many college football fans. An anticipated improvement in passing will determine just how high he should be rated on this list.

These Mississippi State football players were certainly deserving of this recognition. They’ve all been phenomenal players that should continue to excel this season. They also comprise a group that, as Clint Lamb points out, gives MSU the second most amount of players from an SEC school on this list.
