Mississippi State Football vs Arkansas 2013

The Bulldogs were struggling late into the 2013 college football season. In his fourth year in Starkville, it looked like Dan Mullen was going to miss out on a bowl game for the second time as his team was limping to a 4-6 record going up to Arkansas.

The Mississippi State football team had been plagued with injuries throughout the season and no position was more impacted than at quarterback. Dak Prescott had started to take things over but was hurt a couple of weeks before the trip to play the Razorbacks in Little Rock.

That meant that MSU would have to find a way to win with Tyler Russell, who was also dinged up, and freshman Damian Williams. Russell, historically one of the best quarterbacks to play for the Bulldogs, played through most of the game, but clearly wasn’t 100%.

But, the Bulldogs and Razorbacks played each other to a dead even tie by the end of regulation. and went into overtime.

That’s when Damian Williams ran the ball right through Arkansas and put MSU ahead. Then, when the Razorbacks had the ball during their overtime possession, Mississippi State’s defense was able to pick off a pass and end the game. This win gave the Bulldogs momentum going into the Egg Bowl.

It was the start of MSU’s late season turnaround that propelled the Bulldogs to a fantastic 2014 season.
