Mississippi State baseball needs one more win in Omaha to compete for a national title
This particular Mississippi State baseball team shouldn’t be here.
At least, that’s something you would say if you stopped the 2018 college baseball season halfway through.
This is a team that, from the outside looking in, appeared dysfunctional and incapable of stringing enough wins together to even make it on to the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
It’s been said before and it’ll be said again. This Mississippi State baseball team was 2-7 in SEC play after its first three conference series. MSU was struggling to beat even the worst teams in the nation, losing to the likes of Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
However, MSU rebounded. And, as everyone is now familiar, Mississippi State went and beat the three best teams in the SEC with ease. The Bulldogs took two of three from Ole Miss during the SEC series. State then swept Arkansas and finished the regular season out by sweeping Arkansas.
In SEC play, MSU went 8-1 against the three best teams in the conference. In total, right now, Mississippi State is 11-1 against this year’s national seeds. The Bulldogs claimed another win over Ole Miss in the Governor’s Cup, MSU eliminated Florida State from their own regional, and now the Bulldogs dismantled the Tar Heels.
So, while this team was scraping by halfway through this season, they’re now one win away from being a national title contender. This Mississippi State baseball team is one win away from competing for the College World Series Finals.

This team beat the odds to even get to this point. Gary Henderson has guided them through everything that could possibly be imagined this season. And now, they’re here. Right now, them competing for a national title doesn’t seem absurd. But, the Bulldogs must get one more win before we can truly talk about that.
