Mississippi State Football’s Elgton Jenkins On Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List

Elgton Jenkins, the center for Mississippi State football, earned some preseason recognition
As the calendar turns and we enter into the midst of the offseason, more and more watch lists for awards will be released. Yesterday, the Mississippi State football team got some good news from one of those watch lists.
Mississippi State football’s senior center Elgton Jenkins was recognized and placed on spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy. Jenkins was put on the list along with 56 other centers from various conferences and schools. He is one of six players from the Southeastern Conference to earn his way onto the list.
The Rimington Trophy is given each year to college football’s best center. According to the Rimington Trophy’s website, the award is given to “the most outstanding center” every year. According to them, that is determined comes by determining a “consensus All-American center pick from three existing All-America Teams.”
This year, Jenkins has a chance to make history at MSU
The trophy was first awarded back in the year 2000. Since the trophy’s start, no Mississippi State Bulldog has ever earned the award. This year, Elgton Jenkins might have a chance to change that.
Heading into 2018, Mississippi State is going to need Jenkins to play well. The Bulldogs are hoping for a solid and robust offensive line to guide their offense and protect Nick Fitzgerald. Jenkins is going to literally be in the middle of that. That’s because he’s going to line up right in the middle of the offensive line.
Next: Questions Remain About Mississippi State Heading Into Next Year
If Jenkins can prove to be a solid center again this season, then he’ll certainly get recognition for the trophy at the end of the season as well. That said, he’s going to have to play at an incredibly high level. Elgton Jenkins will need to prove he’s the best center to win this award. Right now, he’s got a shot to do that. That’s all he really needs.
