Right Now, How High Should Expectations Be For Mississippi State Beyond 2018?

The future of the Mississippi State football team is bright. But, whatever happens in this season, fans can not let that to skew their expectations to become unrealistic for future football seasons. 2018 is the first year of the Joe Moorhead era and will likely be placed under one heck of a microscope.

Any sort of shortcoming or stumbling by the Bulldogs will likely be jumped on by detractors and possibly blown out of proportion. Any sort of unlikely win or incredible achievement will likely be fluffed up by fanatics and possibly blown out of proportion.

One way or the other, what happens this season should not totally skew one’s perception of what this program is to unrealistic extremes.

The Mississippi State football program is in an incredible position and could be launched into a new stratosphere of success with Joe Moorhead’s direction. Still, the Bulldogs are still in the West division of the Southeastern Conference. Regularly, MSU will have to face difficult tests week in and week out.

The Mississippi State football team is primed for a new level of success. With that comes a new level of expectations attached to that level of success. But, should those expectations come before the wins come?

It’s too early to say that Moorhead will be the greatest coach in MSU history or that MSU is going to be a consistent championship program. Moorhead hasn’t even won, let alone coached, a single game while in Starkville. Raised expectations are a good thing. And maybe one day both of those statements will be true. However, it’s important to raise expectations of this program reasonably and realistically.
