Mississippi State softball was selected to the Tucson Regional for the 2018 NCAA Tournament

After a successful season, the Mississippi State softball team now knows where they’ll be in postseason play. The Bulldogs are heading out west and will play in Tucson, Arizona at the end of this week.

The NCAA Tournament selection committee chose Mississippi State to be the number two seed in the Tucson Regional, hosted by the Arizona Wildcats. The other teams selected to be in the regional includes Arizona as top seeded team, North Dakota State as the third seed, and St. Francis University as the fourth seed.

The format of the regional round here in the NCAA Tournament is double elimination. What does that mean? Well, MSU, or any other team, must lose twice to be sent home.

First, Mississippi State is set to play North Dakota State this Friday. Then, if MSU wins, the Bulldogs will play the winner of the Arizona and St. Francis matchup. Should Mississippi State lose to North Dakota State, the Bulldogs will get the loser of the Arizona and St. Francis matchup.

Then, from there, if the Bulldogs lose again, they are eliminated. But, if Mississippi State can claim enough wins to take the regional, then they’ll advance on to the Super Regional Round.

The Mississippi State softball team has been solid all year long. Early in the year, MSU got off to a phenomenal start. From there though, the Bulldogs struggled some against conference opponents.

However, the difficulties of playing SEC foes has set Mississippi State up for a solid shot in the NCAA Tournament. This year, the entire SEC made it into the NCAA Tournament. That means that the Bulldogs have plenty of experience playing against teams that intend to compete for a national title.
