Mississippi State softball takes down the Texas A&M Aggies and claims the opening game win in the SEC Tournament
The Mississippi State softball team just ended a 13 year SEC Tournament drought! The Bulldogs claimed a win over the No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies to advance on to the second round of the SEC Tournament after coming out on top in a 2-0 pitchers duel.
Holly Ward led the Bulldogs today by shutting out the Texas A&M offense, a feat that is incredibly difficult to do. Ward, in a 7.0 inning complete game effort, threw 108 pitches and struck out 4 batters in the process. On top of that, Ward kept the13th ranked Aggies from touching home plate at all.
The Mississippi State softball team did have their own difficulties scoring. The Bulldogs were held off the scoreboard up into the 6th inning. But, in the 6th inning, senior Morgan Bell came through for MSU.
With Emily Heimberger already on base, Bell sent a double into center field that brought Heimberger home. After ending opposing pitcher Trinity Harrington’s shutout bid, Bell unfortunately came up limping after making it to second base. She was able to make it off the field under her own power though.
With Bell taken out of the game and a 1-0 lead for the Bulldogs in the 6th, Macey Petrey came in to pinch run for MSU. Then, Reggie Harrison hit a single that allowed Petrey to come home and extend the lead to 2-0.
Now, the Mississippi State softball team is gearing up to play in the second round of the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs are now 36-20 on the year and winning pitcher Holly Ward is 15-7 this season. MSU will play South Carolina next.
