Quarterback

It’s pretty clear who is starting for Mississippi State in 2018. Unless, well, injuries become a further issue for the Bulldogs. Nick Fitzgerald, a quarterback currently on a path to continue dominating multiple Mississippi State football records by the time his career is wrapped up should be the first quarterback the Bulldogs rely upon this season.

But, having Keytaon Thompson waiting right behind him as a solid backup option bodes well for the Bulldogs. When Fitzgerald went down with an injury toward the end of 2017, Thompson stepped in and played well.

With Thompson likely locking up the number two spot, that’ll allow Joe Moorhead to redshirt incoming freshman Jalen Mayden and set him up for success later down the road. Redshirting Mayden will provide him with a year of separation between himself and Thompson and allow for both of them to succeed in the future.

  • Starter- Nick Fitzgerald
    • Fitzgerald is playing in the final year of his career at Mississippi State. Expect big things from him this season.
  • Backup- Keytaon Thompson
    • Keytaon Thompson has proven to the Bulldogs that he is already ready when called upon. Should MSU need him, he can step in and play well immediately.
  • Backup- Jalen Mayden
    • Jalen Mayden and Keytaon Thompson are the future of MSU at quarterback. Mayden will likely be redshirted to allow him to progress as a quarterback naturally.
