Mississippi State Baseball Evened up the SEC Series with Mizzou

Well, Mississippi State Baseball got its first SEC win of the season. It took the Bulldogs 15 innings to get it, but Mississippi State took down the Missouri Tigers by a score of 3-1. Now, MSU and Mizzou are both attempting to claim their first SEC series of the year.

Both the starting pitchers clearly performed well as a total of 4 runs was scored in the game.

The Bulldogs sent Ethan Small to the mound and Small gave MSU 6.1 innings in which he allowed 7 hits, but held the Tigers to one run. And while he gave up those hits, Small struck out 7 batters as well.

Missouri had Michael Plassmeyer take the mound and he had control for most of the game. Through 8.1 innings, Plassmeyer struck out 8 and allowed 1 earned run.

Unfortunately for Mizzou and Plassmeyer, that run came in the top of the 9th inning as Mississippi State scored the tying run in the game with a Westburg single that moved Stovall across the plate. But, from there, both bullpens had control of the game.

Mississippi State used three relief pitchers in the game, Blake Smith, JP France, and Zach Neff. As a group, the Bulldogs’ trio kept MSU in the game and gave the Bulldogs’ hitters opportunities to win the game. The three pitchers threw for 8.2 innings and sat 9 of the Tigers’ batters, with Neff striking out 6 in 4.2 innings.

And then in the top of the 15th inning, Mississippi State made its move and took the lead. Stovall singled, scoring Alexander and Mangum, bringing MSU to a 3-1 lead. And the Bulldogs kept it.

MSU and Missouri are both looking for a conference series win. The Bulldogs need wins period. And they’ll have an opportunity to get one at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon. If MSU can win, it’ll mean a lot for the Bulldogs before they head to Baton Rouge.
