Watch: Quinndary Weatherspoon’s Buzzer Beater to Push Mississippi State Past Baylor in NIT
By Ethan Lee
The Mississippi State Bulldogs Overcame Baylor with a Buzzer Beater
Mississippi State needed a little magic to win their second round game of the National Invitation Tournament. The Bulldogs let up after holding a 20 point lead in the first half. In the third quarter, Baylor fought its way to take a lead heading into the final quarter of the game.
With a 58-57 deficit, Mississippi State and Baylor entered into a closely contested fourth quarter. The Bulldogs and Bears battled back and forth as the game winded down. Then, with 4:40 remaining, Baylor’s lead extended out to 9 points, and things seemed lost for MSU.
MSU quickly took that 9 point deficit and cut it into a 70-71 deficit thanks to two buckets and a free throw from Aric Holman followed by a Quinndary Weatherspoon shot from deep. MSU and Baylor then traded buckets for the final minutes of the game with Holman hitting a layup and Tyson Carter draining a three of his own.
But the Bears held a two point lead with only a handful of seconds remaining in the game thanks to a layup of their own. Then, as time drained off the clock, Lamar Peters passed the ball on over to Weatherspoon, allowing Q to toss the ball up as time expired. And for a second, it seemed like MSU would lose as the shot bounced off the rim.
Then, well, the shot fell right back in. And now Mississippi State survives and will advance.
Mississippi State’s next opponent will come from the winner of the Middle Tennessee State University and Louisville game. MTSU and Louisville will play this evening at 5:30 in Louisville, Kentucky. That Bulldogs will take on the victor of that matchup later this week.
