No. 23 Mississippi State Softball Beats UMass Lowell in 6 Innings

The Mississippi State softball team just keeps winning. And the Bulldogs are certainly winning big. No. 23 Mississippi State blew out UMass Lowell in a run rule victory earlier today. The Bulldogs’ win is the first of a doubleheader and comes off of a game that started last night.

Freshman Emily Williams started things last night and then continued through to today. In the 6.0 innings she pitched over a day and a half, Williams allowed 6 hits and walked 5 batters, but she also struck out 8. In that time, Williams held her opponents to only a single run.

Mississippi State, on the other hand, scored at will.

In the bottom of the 1st inning last night, Carmen Carter singled with two outs, which brought Mia Davidson on home. With a 1-0 lead heading into the 2nd inning, MSU then lit up the scoreboard for four more runs.

The first of which came with a bases loaded walk to Reggie Harrison, scoring Bevia Robinson. 2-0 lead MSU. A wild pitch would allow all baserunners to move and Emily Heimberger to come on home. 3-0 lead Bulldogs. Sarai Niu’s 2 RBI single would then push MSU’s lead to 5-0.

The scoring continued on in the top of the 3rd inning, but it wasn’t MSU putting runs on the board. UMass found a way to cut the lead to 5-1.

That lead wouldn’t be that small for that long. In the bottom of the 3rd, MSU came out and put a trio of runs across the plate. Heimberger would score two off of a 2 RBI triple. Davidson would then score the third, giving MSU an 8-1 lead.

This lead would hold for a few more innings, but Carter Spexarth’s walk off single into left field would end the game at 9-1.

Mississippi State is now 20-3 with the win. The winning streak has been stretched out to 8 games and the Bulldogs are wrapping things up with UMass Lowell right now. If everything goes as it is currently, Mississippi State will have earned yet another shut out and another big win. This team keeps on moving and they’re certainly fun to watch.
