Mississippi State Men’s Basketball Injury Update for Nick Weatherspoon: No Sign of A Concussion

In last night’s game against the Tennessee Vols, Mississippi State’s star freshman guard Nick Weatherspoon went down with an injury. After making a break for the basket, Weatherspoon went up and then came back down. In the process, Nick landed awkwardly on his side.

As Weatherspoon was on the ground, Tennessee got possession of the ball and went back down the court. Mississippi State quickly stole the ball back, but Nick never got up. He was on the ground and unable to move.

With possession of the ball, Nick’s older brother Quinndary made a rush to the basket, not seeing where his brother was on the ground. Quinndary and a Tennessee basketball player ended up under the basket and Nick’s head and neck unfortunately, and accidentally, ended up under the Tennessee player’s foot.

Nick would then require immediate medical attention. As it turned out, Nick Weatherspoon was carted off the court on a backboard and with a neck brace. From there, Weatherspoon was taken to a local hospital in Saint Louis.

The SEC has since then released a statement regarding their referees’ inaction during the game. And after a multitude of tests, the hospital released Nick Weatherspoon.

Thankfully The Situation Isn’t Worse

Thankfully, Nick doesn’t have a concussion, or any sort of related brain or spinal injury. Mississippi State is worried about his pelvic bone, which would explain why he couldn’t get up, but this situation could be far worse.

Weatherspoon will get the opportunity to return home with his friends, family, and teammates. The Bulldogs will be returning to Starkville shortly. Now we wait to hear what’ll happen with postseason play and how Nick will heal. MSU will almost certainly end up in the NIT. Though he likely won’t be able to play in it, hopefully Nick Weatherspoon makes a quick and easy recovery.
