Mississippi State Softball Takes Down Illinois

In the first game of a doubleheader against Illinois, the Mississippi State Bulldogs beat the Illini 9 to 5. Mississippi State relied on a strong surge off offense early on to come away with the eventual 4 run victory.

In the first two innings of the game, Mississippi State pummeled Illini pitcher Emily Oestreich for a total of 8 runs. The Bulldogs put up their first 4 runs in the first inning thanks to two homers, both of which were two run home runs.

With Kat Moore on first base and 0 outs, Mia Davidson sent a shot over the centerfield wall, getting MSU a 2-0 lead. Later, with 2 outs and Sarai Niu on first thanks to a walk, Carmen Carter put a home run out through left.

With a 4-0 lead heading into the second inning, Mississippi State continued to pour the runs on. Davidson struck again, this time with a double that brought Bevia Robinson home. With Davidson on second and Kat Moore on third, Reggie Harrison then hit a three run jack, getting the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.

Illinois would start to fight back. The Illini scored in the 4th, cutting the lead to 7 runs, but MSU pushed it back to 9-1 in the bottom half of the inning. With the possibility of being run ruled, Illinois scored two more in the top of the 5th to keep the game going.

The visitors then scored a couple more in the top of the 9th inning, but that’s as close as they could come.

Mississippi State is now currently playing the Illini again in their second game of a doubleheader. The Bulldogs are set to face UMass Lowell twice this weekend as well. MSU will face them tomorrow and then again on Sunday.
