Mississippi State’s softball team took on two different opponents and came away with two dominant wins yesterday. The Bulldogs battled the 13-3 Mercer Bears and won 7-1 in the first game and followed that up with a 9-0 run rule thrashing of the Sam Houston State Bearkats.

Game 1, Mississippi State 7-Mercer 1

Freshman Emily Williams started game one for MSU and dealt all day. Through her complete game, 7 inning effort, the young pitcher sat 13 batters down on strikes while holding the visiting Mercer team to 5 hits. Williams’ effort took her a total of 159 pitches to accomplish.

While Mississippi State was at the plate, the Bulldogs totaled 7 hits, but also tacked on 7 runs, 5 of which were earned. In the bottom of the 1st inning, senior Reggie Harrison hailing from Houston, Texas put MSU ahead early with a solo shot.

Mercer later tied the game in the 4th inning, but MSU didn’t flinch and struck back in the 4th as well. In the bottom half of the inning, Mississippi State scored 5 runs. The first of which came from another solo shot, this time from Sarai Niu. A single from Bevia Robinson would later plate two more runs. Two throwing errors later and MSU came out of the inning with a 6-1 lead.

Freshman Macey Petrey would bring about the final score of 7-1 with the third solo homer for MSU, this one in the 6th inning.

Game 2, Mississippi State 9-Sam Houston State 0

The second game of the day for Mississippi State was a bit shorter than the first. The Bulldogs run ruled the Bearkats, who traveled in from Huntsville, Texas.

Senior Cassady Knudsen started for MSU in the second game and, like Williams before her, had no issue putting opposing batters away. Knudsen struck 8 batters out in the 5 innings that the game was played in all while keeping the Bearkats off the board in the process. She held SHSU to a single hit and only gave up one walk in the game.

Offensively, the Bulldogs gave Knudsen immediate run support in the form of 5 first inning runs.  Sarai Niu started MSU with an RBI single which Emily Heimberger followed after with an RBI of her own. Carmen Carter added a couple more thanks to a 2 run RBI double. One Calyn Adams RBI single later and MSU had a 5-0 lead early on.

In the second inning, that lead was stretched out to 6-0 because of a RBI double into right field from Reggie Harrison. MSU would later add two more runs in the third inning and then another in the fourth, setting State up for a 9-0 run rule win.

Mississippi State is riding a 3 game winning streak and is now 15-3 after the win. The Bulldogs will wrap up the weekend with one more game against Sam Houston State to finish up the Bulldog Slamboree Invitational.
