Mississippi State has had a history of developing solid SEC running backs in Starkville. Can La’Damian Webb become the next?

Mississippi State landed four-star tailback Kylin Hill in the 2017 recruiting cycle. Dan Mullen won’t settle, though. He has his sights set on Alabama running back La’Damian Webb.

The Clarion-Ledger’s Will Sammon talked with three-star running La’Damian Webb and dicussed his interest in the Bulldogs. Webb told Sammon that Mississippi State is “most definitely” at the top of his list right now.

"“Most definitely they would be at the top right now,” Webb said.“It’s been pretty good so far,” Webb said. “I really like the relationship with Dan Mullen and coach Greg Knox because he is a very good guy with a very open personality. I like the campus and coach D.J. Looney have a good relationship with each other also.”"

Webb, a three-star 5-foot-9 and 190 pound running back from Opelika, Alabama, lists offers from Louisville, Missouri, and Ole Miss in addition to State. He has the Bulldogs on top right now. Webb rushed for 3,242 yards and 47 touchdowns as junior for Beauregard High School.

He set an Alabama high school record for rushing touchdowns in one season, according to Sammon. Webb’s 3,242 yards is the second most in the Yellow Hammer State’s history. This past January, La’Damian Webb became the first junior to ever win Mr. Football in the state of Alabama.

"For the past 34 years, the Alabama Sports Writers Association had bestowed the top senior in the state with the Mr. Football award. No, being a senior was not a prerequisite for winning the state’s highest honor, but that’s the way it had played out since the first Mr. Football was named in 1982.It was a forgone conclusion: If you won Mr. Football, you were a senior. But then again, no junior in the state of Alabama has ever shone as brightly as Beauregard running back La’Damian Webb.Webb, who in 2016 set a single-season state record for rushing touchdowns and led the Hornets to their first state championship, was named the 35th winner of the Mr. Football award at the ASWA’s annual Player of the Year Awards luncheon, presented by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association on Wednesday."

Mississippi State already has former four-star tailbacks Aeris Williams and Nick Gibson in the backfield. Alec Murphy and Dontavian Lee are also on the roster. Kylin Hill is next in line to take carries, but you can’t ever have enough talented ball carriers in your program.

La’Damian Webb has big-play ability that will have the chance to open up Dan Mullen’s offense in a huge way. Mullen and company will be vying for the talented Alabama playmaker’s commitment the entire process.

Webb would be a perfect addition to four-star quarterback commit Jalen Mayden and four-star wideout pledge Malik Heath.
