Texas 4-star dual-threat QB Jalen Mayden chooses Dan Mullen and Mississippi State over Baylor, Louisville, Nebraska, and Tennessee on Tuesday night.

Clanga!

Jalen Mayden, one of the top rated quarterbacks in the 2018 class, has committed to Mississippi State over home-state Baylor, another SEC school in Tennessee, and Louisville on Friday evening.

Mayden, a native of Sachse High School outside of Dallas, has been Mississippi State’s top priority at the QB position for a while now and has rumored to be on commit watch. He announced his college decision in front of his teammates and friends at his spring game on Friday.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 215 pounds, the Texas native possesses the needed size that Dan Mullen prefers his quarterback to have in his offense. Between Tim Tebow, Chris Relf, Dak Prescott, and now Nick Fitzgerald, Mullen’s offense works best with an athletic quarterback that has size and can hurt defenses both in the air and with their feet.

The Sachse signal caller is rated as the second best quarterback from the Lone Star State by the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Scout has him ranked even higher, coming in as a top 100 recruit in America. He is a consensus 4-star quarterback, so Mississippi State is obviously welcoming in a big time addition to their already loaded QB room.

Jalen Mayden led his Mustangs to an 11-1 record and a district championship last season while earning District 10-6A Offensive MVP honors. The dual threat play-maker threw for a recorded 2,840 yards and 27 touchdowns during his junior season of Texas high school football. He added an additional 632 yards and 11 more touchdowns on the ground. Mayden can truly make defenses pay in every way.

The lefty has the football-IQ, the athleticism, and the leadership that coaches drool over when searching for a quarterback. Despite his impressive numbers on the ground, Mayden is more of a patient, pass first player when behind center.

Mayden has a cannon. He has the arm strength to  hit receivers deep down field in stride and can make the tough intermediate throws, as well. Although he prefers to make throws from the pocket, Mayden can hurt you with his feet, too. A combination of his strong arm and his 4.65 40-time makes Jalen Mayden a lethal weapon behind center.

His pedigree is pretty solid, too.

Mayden’s two older brothers played division one football — James Jr played receiver at Rice and Jared plays in the defensive backfield in Tuscaloosa.

Also, Mayden has a connection to Mississippi State. His uncle, Tyrone Washington, played hoops for the Maroon and White. Washington was a freshman on the 1996 Final Four team and was a second-round selection by the Houston Rockets in 1999.

Crazy how things work out. Jalen Mayden is Mississippi State’s second highest rated commitment for the 2018 recruiting class, which moves up five spots to 23rd in the nation.
