After struggling at quarterback for decades before the Dan Mullen-era, the quarterback position looks to be the best it has ever been for a very long time.

Recruiting is the lifeline of college football — especially in the Southeastern Conference. The importance of recruiting talented players heightens when you play the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and LSU week in and week out.

Although Mississippi State will likely never be a place that will regularly recruit inside the top ten, the recruiting has seen a jump lately. Mullen understands that developing raw and overlooked prospects is nice, but high-level talent is generally needed in order to consistently be in the hunt for the SEC West crown.

The 2015 recruiting cycle saw Mississippi State dominate the Magnolia state in recruiting –landing six of the top ten recruits in the state. Perhaps, even more impressive, the Bulldogs earned commitments (and LOIs) from four of the top five instate prospects: Jamal Peters, Leo Lewis, Fletcher Adams, and Malik Dear.

Although the class was not as highly rated as the previous cycle, Mississippi State continued some of their momentum on the trail in their 2016 class. Dan Mullen and company landed the top overall player in Mississippi, Jeffery Simmons, and two other 4-star prospects in Kobe Jones and Marquiss Spencer. On the field, Simmons was a huge, huge land for the staff.

And then, of course, the Bulldogs earned commitments from Army All-American linebacker Willie Gay, 4-star tailback Kylin Hill, and pass-rusher Aaron Odom out of the state of Mississippi in this past year’s class.

This year, however, Mississippi State is spreading a little more of their recruiting footprint to outside states, such as Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.

Two of the bigger names of the 2018 cycle both play the same position: quarterback. 4-star signal caller Jalen Mayden (Sachse, Texas) and athletic dual threat Gerry Bohanon (Earle, Arkansas) are among the elite in their position across the nation.

Both four-star players are rumored to be trending in Mississippi State’s direction:

Mayden holds offers from the likes of Baylor, Louisville, Nebraska, and Tennessee. The Texas quarterback has experience at one of the highest levels of Texas high school football and has all the traits you look for in a starting quarterback.

Bohanon is considered to be more raw of the two prospects, but his upside may be higher than any other quarterback in the 2018 cycle. The Arkansas prospect has been offered by Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Louisville, and Ole Miss. His athleticism and decision making would be put to display in Mullen’s offense.

Landing two blue-chip signal callers in the same class is rare, but Dan Mullen is quickly building a reputation as one of the better QB-whispers across college football. The rise of Dak Prescott in Dallas and the development of Nick Fitzgerald should only push young signal callers to learning under Mullen and playing in his system.

With Fitzgerald having two more years of eligibility and 2016 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Keytaon Thompson already in the QB room, is it possible for Mississippi State’s quarterback situation to get even better?

Bohanon is scheduled to announce his commitment this Friday, May 19th. Mayden is expected to make his decision at his high school’s spring game on May 23rd.
