‘Twas the Night Before the Egg Bowl
The Egg Bowl is coming upon us Saturday afternoon. So before the football action begins, let’s have a nice little poem to read the kids asleep tonight.
‘Twas the night before the Egg Bowl and all through the state
Not a creature was stirring, except the bagmen up there who hate.
The Golden Egg was sitting by the field with care,
In hopes that it would never have to come back there.
The Bulldogs were nestled all snug in their beds,
With visions of the Egg being lifted over their heads.
And Sirmon with his sheet, and Dan with his visor,
Had settle their brains that Hugh was none the wiser.
When out in the lot there arose such a clatter,
Dan sprang from his bed to see what’s the matter.
Away to the window he flew like a flash,
Tore open the curtains and threw up the sash.
The moon showing bright on the hotel lot
Gave the lustre of mid-day to the cars at the spot.
When, what to Dan’s wondering eyes should appear,
But a brand new Cadillac, with a front to fear.
With a big young driver, as a matter of fact,
Dan knew in a moment it must be ol’ Dak.
More rapid than eagles his old teammates they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!
“Now Nick! Now, Brandon! Now, Jamal and Cedric!
On, Gerri! On, Fred!, On Kivon and Malik!
To the top of the state! To the top of them all!
Now hit them! Hit them! Hit them all!”
As dry leaves that before the Maroon bus fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, they make them fly.
So up to the place called the Vaught they drove,
With a great game plan, and Dak coming home.
And then, in a twinkling, Dan heard on the move
The CLANGA and CLANGA of each Bulldog en route
As Dan drew in his head, and was turning around,
Into the room came Dak with a bound.
He was dressed in all Maroon, from his helmet to cleats,
And his family was there, for without, no trip was complete.
All of Bulldog Nation he had hung on his back,
And he looked like a player, just straight up and back.
His eyes-how they twinkles! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like irons, his nose just as berry!
His big smiling mouth was open almost like an O,
And his beard, it was trimmed, just like so.
He was trimmed and fit, just like a Quarterback should
And Dan laughed when he saw him, just like he would.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave Dan to know he had nothing to dread.
He spoke a few words, and went straight to work,
And motivated the players, then left with a little twerk.
And laying his finger aside of his heart,
And giving a nod, we all knew his part!
He sprang to his truck, to his engine gave a tickle,
And away they pumped like it was all so simple.
But Dan heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Go to Hell Ole Miss, and fight with all your might!”
