This1986 SNL skit featured a reference to the Mississippi State vs. Auburn game.

The skit is called “Two Sammies” featuring Kevin Nealon and Dana Carvey. They look through the TV Guide and see Mississippi State is playing Auburn on tape delay.

Phil Hartman and Nora Dunn (not seen in above video) also appeared in the skit. The premise of the it is two guys named “Sammy” who hang out in their basement drinking beer and watching TV. It’s not exactly stellar comedy, but it’s pretty unusual that Mississippi State – or any SEC team – would be mentioned in a New York City based comedy show.

Just in case you want to participate in the same activity, you can watch the full 1986 Mississippi State vs. Auburn game below:

1986 was Rockey Felker’s first year as head coach of Mississippi State. He got off to a terrific start by beating Syracuse and then No. 8 Tennessee. After a hiccup vs. Southern Miss, the Bulldogs beat Florida, Memphis, Arkansas State and Tulane for a 6-1 record and No. 13 national ranking. Auburn was ranked No. 7 for this particular game and won it 35-6.

That sent State into a spiral as they were subsequently blown out by Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss to end the year 6-5. Back then 6-5 meant no bowl game, so the Dawgs stayed at home.

Ultimately, that was the best year in Felker’s five years as head coach. After a pair of 5-6 seasons in 1989 and 1990 he was fired in favor of Jackie Sherrill and the rest is history.
