Mississippi State had their time at SEC Media Days on Tuesday morning. Here are some highlights…

Representing the Bulldogs were Dan Mullen, A.J. Jefferson, Fred Ross and Richie Brown (all seniors). Video:

Audio:

There was a lot of talk about switching to the 3-4 defense under Peter Sirmon, and of course life after Dak. Who will be the leader of the team and who will be the quarterback (the answer is we have no idea right now). The running game will be relied on more, etc.

Dan Mullen’s shoes were a topic of conversation once again – no doubt he felt like adding that, along with his fresh water surfing video, in advance of the serious Jeffrey Simmons questions he knew he’d be asked.

No team was talked about more than MSU on Tuesday, and it’s because of the Jeffrey Simmons situation. I’m sure you’ve heard all about it by now…..and that’s why I put video of the players up first – to hear some actual football discussion. But I’ll address it real quick, mostly because I have to have at least 250 words in a post.

The question came a couple of times about what if the woman being hit was a member of Mullen’s family. The first time he gave a standard response and moved on. The second time the question was more forceful and the media erupted after Mullen’s response (audio).

Here’s the thing: Simmons didn’t just go hit a woman. It didn’t start as a fight between him and a woman. He was in the street, with people all around, watching his sister fight another woman.

These questions and responses from the media paint the picture that Mullen’s wife is in Walgreen’s and gets socked by a man and she’s lying on the aisle floor.

Mullen said his wife or daughter would not have been in that situation. He’s right. Are you going to tell me they are going to be involved in an altercation with another woman in the streets of their community? Are you out of your mind?

If my wife was fighting another woman and that other woman’s brother was watching ten feet away, how do I suspect this is going to end? Who am I upset with at the end of it? Actually I think I’d just move to another state and start a new life because obviously I’ve hit rock bottom if events like this are happening in my life.

There is no way members of Mullen’s family would be involved in anything like this. Get real. The fact that Simmons grew up in a culture where this could happen means he probably needs some guidance for a better future. What better place than around a college football team with a handful of respected men to act as father figures?

Simmons’ suspension should’ve been longer than one game, but the vitriol from the media is unnecessary. They tried and tried all day to play “gotcha” with Dan Mullen. They feel like they won. What’s new from a bunch of libs.
