Badly needed summer school lesson for MSU fans: how to exit a parking lot.

I love going to Mississippi State sporting events. But I’d almost rather stay at home than have to deal with the mind-boggling incompetency of most drivers who fail to understand the rules on how you exit a crowded parking lot.

It’s real simple to perform this action correctly. Here’s the rule: TAKE TURNS.

Just because you are in the line of cars that is directly spilling onto the destination road doesn’t mean you don’t have to let people in. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LET PEOPLE IN, THAT’S HOW IT WORKS.

A crowded parking lot is a huge mass of pavement or gravel that features cars coming from all directions to exit at the two or three available curbs. That means everyone needs to take turns letting others into the line of cars that is directly spilling onto the destination road.

Let’s use an example….

Line A, B and C are trying to get out of the Sanderson Center parking lot after a basketball game. Cars in line A can simply proceed forward to reach the destination road. Cars in line B are coming in from the right and need to merge into line A, and cars in line C are coming in from the left and need to merge into line A as well.

Let’s say all the cars in each line are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. Here’s how they should spill onto the destination road:

  • line A, car 1
  • line B, car 1
  • line A, car 2
  • line C, car 1
  • line A, car 3
  • line B, car 2
  • line A, car 4
  • line C, car 2

And so on and so forth.

Line A gets more cars onto the destination road faster because it’s always the longest line, they are directly in line with the destination road and that’s how taking turns works.

If you’re in line A, DO NOT BE A KNUCKLEHEAD AND RIDE THE BUMPER OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU SO NO ONE CAN GET IN.

ALSO DON’T BE A KNUCKLEHEAD AND LET FIVE CARS FROM LINE B AND/OR C IN CAUSING EVERYONE BEHIND YOU TO LAY ON THE WHEEL.

Mississippi is home to the nicest people in America but folks turn into jerks when leaving a parking lot. I blame ignorance, really, but that’s what this summer school lesson is for.

If you’re from Houston, MS or any other small town you probably don’t get in lines like this at church as people in Ridgeland or Southaven or Birmingham or Atlanta do. But that doesn’t mean you can’t subscribe to this simple concept that is both friendly and smoother.

Improper exiting of parking lots at MSU sporting events has been an problem for as long as I’ve been going to games on campus. Let’s fix this.
