Periodically throughout the summer, we will be taking a look at individual members of the Famous Maroon Band which make the game day environment so great.

One of the great things about college football game day at any school is the atmosphere. And one of the most important parts, and often under appreciated, is the band.

I was in the band in high school and spent two years paying for my education in the band at Northwest Community College before finishing up at Mississippi State. So I decided to put the spotlight on the Famous Maroon Band this summer.

Today’s spotlight is on Brittany Carey. She is one of the Drum Majors for the Famous Maroon Band. Brittany will be entering her senior year at Mississippi State for the 2016-17 school year.

Tell us a little something about yourself, such as your major and what role you fill with the Famous Maroon Band.

"My name is Brittany Carey and I am a senior double majoring in Spanish and Educational Psychology. I have been fortunate enough to be drum major for the Famous Maroon Band for three years now. My freshman year, I was in the colorguard during marching season, but I play alto saxophone during concert season."

In all likelihood, you joined the band in middle school or junior high. What made you want to be in the band at that time?

"I think for me, band was just something that everyone tried in the sixth grade. If someone did not like it, then they would quit, but I really enjoyed playing the saxophone and I exceled at it. From sixth grade to now, band has brought me nothing but positive memories! My twin sister Ashley, who is one of the other drum majors for the FMB, was doing band and so it was fun to be in band with her and experience that together."

What musicians have had the biggest influence on you?

"My high school band directors, Mel Morse and Kim Hallmark had a large influence over me while I was in high school band. They were always supportive of me and encouraged me to be the best I could be both musically and in anything I did. They also helped mold me into the leader I am today by working with me as a section leader and drum major in high school, which helped me to be the leader I am now for the Famous Maroon Band."

What is your favorite memory of being a member of the Famous Maroon Band?

"One of my favorite band memories is being able to travel with the band to all kinds of locations to be able to cheer on the dawgs! I have been to Texas A&M, Kentucky, Missouri, Memphis for the Liberty Bowl, Miami for the Orange Bowl, and Charlotte for the Belk Bowl. Being able to travel and support the football team has led to countless memories, both full of sunshine and pouring down rain, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!"

What is your favorite non-band related memory at Mississippi State?

"One of my favorite memories outside of band at Mississippi State is being involved in different organizations across campus that have helped me to become more involved in the community, like the Wesley Foundation and Montgomery Leadership Program!"
