The Mississippi State baseball team has a strong case for a national seed, but many fans are worrying about the team’s RPI as the regular season winds down.

It has been an amazing year for the Mississippi State baseball team. The Bulldogs are currently in the top 4 according to most rankings, and they have built a solid case to grab one of the eight national seeds given out for the NCAA Tournament. Despite the solid case, many fans are worried about the pesky RPI.

I talked about why we shouldn’t stress over this too much on my most recent episode of the Bully Bark Line on Tuesday. The RPI is an important tool used by the committee, but it isn’t the only one.

The Mississippi State baseball team is currently sporting an RPI of 13 according to D1baseball.com. Since they are falling outside of the top 8, many think this will keep the Bulldogs from hosting.

The Bulldogs might not have an RPI as high as some of the other teams competing for a national seed, but they have plenty of other things in their favor. Here are just a few.

  • A winning record against the RPI top 100 with 18 wins.
  • A 10-7 record against the RPI top 25, one of only three teams with more than 15 games against the top 25 with a record over .500
  • Road series victories over Vanderbilt, Florida, and LSU.
  • Won 7 of 8 SEC series, with a chance to win 9 of 10.

The midweek loss to Eastern Kentucky isn’t good, but it isn’t driving us down from 5 to 13. It cost the Bulldogs one or two spots at this point, but it isn’t the killer many Mississippi State baseball fans think it is.

The other thing many fans are forgetting is the fact the Bulldogs are going to play in the SEC tournament. There will be opportunities to drive up the RPI during it as well.

If the Bulldogs can take care of business against the Auburn Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks, then the Mississippi State baseball team will get its first national seed in school history. If they don’t, it will be because they simply didn’t do what they needed to these last two weeks of the season, not because of their RPI.
