MSU took Game 1 in Baton Rouge plus some more items of note from Bulldog athletics.

1. Mississippi State beat LSU in Game 1, 12-8. The game featured two grand slams – one by Nathaniel Lowe in the 1st inning and another by Antoine Duplantis of LSU in the 7th.

Lowe’s grand slam gave MSU a 4-0 lead. On the prior play LSU missed an opportunity for a double play which would have ended the inning. In the top of the 8th, State put up a two out rally resulting in three runs after Hunter Stovall reached first on a strikeout.

Dakota Hudson didn’t have his best stuff, but he was still able to grind out 6.1 innings. His seven earned runs was the most ever given up, but he still managed to notch the win. Ryan Rigby and Reid Humphreys (who got out of a bases loaded jam) finished the game off on the mound for the Bulldogs.

The game started really well for MSU, but LSU quickly tied it at 4-4 after a couple of innings. Then State stretched the lead to 9-4 only to see Duplantis hit the grand slam which would make it 9-8. The Dawgs third and final big lead proved to be enough, however, and they win 12-8.

Game 2 will be played on Saturday at 6:00 on ESPNU.

2. The length of college baseball games is almost too much. Last night’s game was almost four hours, which I guess isn’t surprising with 20 runs and 26 hits. Still, there’s just too much walking around and stepping out and everything else that slows the pace.

I love Jake Mangum – he’s been an incredible surprise this year. But he drives me crazy stepping out of the box, stopping to adjust his gloves, then taking a practice swing and slowly getting back into the box. After every single pitch.

Earlier this year we had a nine inning game vs. Georgia last nearly five hours. Some of these Sunday games are conflicting with a 6:00 family dinner. That shouldn’t happen with a 1:30 start time.

3. Last weekend Dak Prescott appeared on Jon Gruden’s QB Camp. If you missed it, I’m sure there will be replays on the family of ESPN networks you can find it on. Gruden was very complimentary of Prescott but also pressed him pretty hard on some issues including his DUI in March. It still appears Dak will be a 2nd or 3rd round pick next week.

4. Food – here is my favorite homemade version of eggs benedict, mainly because it’s easy.

Warm an English muffin in the oven for about 5-6 minutes. Fry and egg and cook some bacon (it’s supposed to be a poached egg and Canadian bacon but like I said this recipe is much easier and just as tasty). Then for the hollandaise: beat an egg yoke (no white), then melt about 1/8 stick of butter in the microwave. Pour the hot butter into the yoke. Then you’ll need a little bit of lemon juice and cayenne pepper. Zap it in the microwave for 5-7 seconds.
